Course Details

Course Goal:

To develop NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic CCW Shooting Course and to teach for the Ohio and select other states’ Concealed Handgun Carry License (CCW, CHL).

Prerequisite:

Please review these NRA CCW Instructor pre-course qualification listed here:

  • Must be a current NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructor. There are absolutely no exceptions to this requirement. See our classes here.
  • Must have proof that you completed the NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) within the past 24 months. Only NRA TC’s are exempt from this requirement. See our upcoming classes here.
  • Certificate of completion of the NRA Basic CCW Course. There are absolutely no exceptions to the NRA Basic CCW Training requirement.
  • Be sure to practice the NRA style drawing from concealment. The final qualification you must draw from concealment and shoot under timed drills. You will only have 2 opportunities at the training to qualify. If you are unable to qualify then the NRA requires that you complete the entire instructor training. I can’t share the actual qualification, but here are some practice drills. Here are the range commands for the NRA CCW course.

Please note that the instructor level training requires the ability to plan and to be ready for the training and prerequisites. If you have questions, please ask ahead of time, but you must be familiar with the expectations before the training. If you can’t be prepared for the instructor training, then the expectation is that you won’t be able to properly prepare to teach a class after you certified.

Course Fee:

$375 for the 2-day NRA CCW instructor class.

Total Cost:

$375 Class fee + $135 NRA Basic CCW Training + (any NRA Instructor Certification fees if applicable) = $510

Course Location:

Please see each date for the location. Typically, our classes are within 20 minutes of downtown Columbus Ohio. The classroom portion is located at the historic Wagnalls Memorial Library in Lithopolis Ohio. Our private covered shooting range is 4 minutes away in Canal Winchester Ohio.

Course Length:

The NRA CCW Instructor Training is two full days from 8 am to 6 pm.  The actual ending times are based on the instructor candidates’ performance.

Food and Drinks:

You will not be able to leave the class to go out for lunch. Please either pack you own lunch/drinks/snacks or plan to purchase in class. Typically, there is an option to purchase food and drinks at the training. More details will be sent after you register and as the class day gets closer. We don’t mind if you are eating/drinking during class. (We have a microwave you can use but we do not have a fridge.)

What to Bring:

You are responsible for supplying these items. Please be sure to have the complete list and that you test your range gear before the training:

  • Your ID (Driver’s license)
  • Binder, 2-inch, to hold your materials.
  • Pen, paper, highlighters, post-it-notes, etc.
  • Gun bag, box, or case to secure your firearm when not being used (keep your pistol in the bag, box, or case unloaded until told to take it out).
  • Pistol with a minimum of 3 loading devices (magazines and/or speedloaders (for revolvers)) – The minimum caliber is 9x19 mm or 38 Special. The pistol can have any sighting system. No AR style pistols will be allowed. We suggest more magazines or speed loaders if possible.
  • Ammunition – Bring 200 rounds of ammo for the instructor training and qualification. You’ll need an additional 200 rounds if you’re doing the Basic CCW course as well (400 total). We don’t have restrictions on the type of bullet or case. You probably won’t shoot it all but just in case if you need to re-shoot.
  • Strong side hip holster – can be outside or inside the waistband. Only hip holsters will be used. No Serpa style holsters allowed. Please be sure to test your gear before the course.
  • Holder for a spare magazine and/or speedloaders – You only need a single magazine and/or speed loader holder, but we recommend a double holder if possible.
  • Cover garment (open or closed front) – the range training is shot from concealment.
  • Range safety equipment – Eye and ear protection are required. We require side shields for glasses. Electronic ear protection can help with communications. We recommend the Walker brand. We’re under cover so dark safety glasses aren’t recommended.
  • Food, drinks, and snacks as needed. We recommend extra water and snacks for the range time.
  • Dress for the weather – We have a covered outdoor range. Please be sure to wear close-toed shoes.

NRA CCW Instructor Range Qualification:

Yes, there is a range qualification that you must pass to become an NRA certified CCW Instructor. You will only have two opportunities to pass the qualification at the training. I can’t share the qualification before the training, but you can use these drills to practice before the course. Click here to download the practice.

Breaking any safety and/or range rules will disqualify you from the qualification and result in failing the class.

NRA CCW Instructor Training FAQs

Where are the Classes Held?

The classes are held in Canal Winchester, Ohio (in central Ohio, Southeast of Columbus, Ohio). The exact location is either in the registration page for the specific class date and/or it will be sent after you register. Our large, covered range is on private property in Canal Winchester and is only used for Armed2Defend training courses.

Both days of the training will go from around 8 am till 6 pm. You'll need all of your required equipment for both days of the training, but we'll only shoot live rounds on the second day.

The actual ending times are based on the instructor candidates' performance.

Do I Have to Take the NRA Basic CCW Course?

Yes. The only reason you won't have to take it is if you've already completed it and you have the official NRA Basic Pistol Course completion certificate. Click here to read more about the NRA Basic CCW course and to sign up.

Please note, that having a concealed carry license, military training, law enforcement training, or any other training experience does not exempt you from this requirement.

Just as OPOTA doesn't recognize my NRA credentials towards the OPOTA Instructor prerequisites, the NRA doesn't recognize other organizations training towards their prerequisites.

What If I Miss My Scheduled Class Day?

We require a $100 non-refundable and non-transferable deposit be paid at the time of registration. This deposit cannot be transferred to a new class date.

You can select to

A.) Just pay the $100 deposit to register and then pay the remaining $275 at the door on the day of class.

B.) Pay the entire $375 upfront.

*Please note that option B includes your $100 non-refundable deposit. If you choose this option and end up not being able to make it to class, you forfeit the $100 portion of your $375 payment but the remaining $275 can be applied to a future class date.

When Can I Start Teaching?

It can take up to 12 days after the class to become certified, but generally it is much faster. After you pass the course I have up to 10 days to submit the course report to the NRA. After the report is submitted, I'll send you an email to notify you. The NRA may take up to 2 days to process the report and then you'll be able to create your login on the NRA Instructor Portal and pay your credentialing fees. After the fees are paid then you're instantly a certified instructor. You'll then be able to download your instructor credential card and certificate from the NRA instructor portal and start teaching classes.

How Long is the Certification Good For? How do I Renew it?

Your instructor certification for the NRA Basic CCW course will get added to your current certifications. It won't add any additional time to your current certification. The NRA uses a 2 years certification period. Before the 2 years are up, all you must do is pay the certification fee to extend it an additional 2 years. The fee is based on what certifications you hold and if you're a current NRA member at the time of renewing.

Currently, the NRA does not require renewal training for the NRA Pistol Instructor Certification.

Do I Have to Have a Concealed Carry License?

No, you just need to meet the pre-course requirements to take the training.

Which States will My NRA Instructor Certification be Valid in?

The NRA Pistol Instructor Certification is a national certification. You can teach in any state, but you might not be able to certify for any state's concealed carry license. Each state sets the instructor credential and the training requirement needed to get the license. You'll just have to check with the state that you are interested in teaching in to see if the NRA Pistol Instructor certification will work.

Since the NRA is considered the gold standard for firearms instruction, many states do accept the NRA Pistol Instructor certification.

I'm Under 21, Can I Become an Instructor?

The NRA has three types of instructors. All Certified Instructors must be 21 or older. Certified Instructors can teach on their own without over-site. This is also the certification you want to be able to teach Ohio CCW classes.

NRA Assistant Instructors can assist in classes and order course materials from the NRA. To become an Assistant Instructor, you have to be 18 or older and complete all the other requirements just as if you wanted to become a Certified Instructor.

NRA Apprentice Instructors can also assist in classes. To become an Apprentice Instructor, you have to be 13-17 and complete all the other requirements just as if you wanted to become a Certified Instructor.

Contact Kevin with any questions about the different levels or instructors.

Recommended Hotel Options

(There are some inexpensive options off Interstate 70 on Scarborough Blvd and Brice Rd (~$45-$70). Even so, we would not recommend staying in that area.)

**TOP CHOICE**

Carraway Guest House

156 Washington St, Canal Winchester, OH 43110

6 min to classroom
Approx $79/night

Closest option by far. In quaint downtown Canal Winchester.

Friendly owners. Great reviews.

Unfortunately it is frequently booked up.

Best Western Canal Winchester Inn

6323 Prentiss School Place, Canal Winchester, OH 43110

9 min to classroom
Approx $139/night

Second closest option. Close to several restaurants & fast food options.

Arguably overpriced.

WoodSpring Suites Columbus Southeast

4105 Hamilton Square Blvd, Groveport, OH 43125

16 min to classroom
Approx $80/night

Reasonably close. Conveniently right off highway, one exit away from Canal Winchester.

Close to a few fast food options and a Giant Eagle.

Holiday Inn Express Southeast Columbus

4041 Hamilton Square Blvd, Columbus, OH 43125

16 min to classroom
Approx $150/night

Located right next to the previous option (WoodSpring) but much more expensive.

At this price point, the much closer Best Western would make more sense.

Baymont by Wyndham Columbus/ Rickenbacker

2323 Rickenbacker Pkwy W, Columbus, OH  43217

16 min to classroom
Approx $80/night

Inexpensive. Looks nice. Right across from the Rickenbacker Military Base.

Surrounded by warehouses. No close fast food or grocery store options.

Great place to train! I have gone on to become an a RSO and other NRA and Non NRA programs including youth intro to rifle sponsored in part by a grant from the ODNR.

We are family owned and operated.

You’ll quickly see that our business is more than a business to us. We have a passion to provide meaningful training. It is that passion that fuels us!

I took a class to become a concealed carrier in January 2010 (before we started Armed2Defend). My instructor was there to collect my payment and check off some boxes. He didn’t care if I learned anything. It was a paycheck to him and in his eyes the class was just a hoop for me to jump through. Ten months later Armed2Defend was born with the vision of providing excellent training at an affordable price.

Our instructors are amazing. They will make sure you learn the knowledge, skills and attitude that set the foundation for being a responsibly armed citizen! And you’ll feel like part of the Armed2Defend family during the process.

I hope to meet you in a class soon,

Alisha Sadeski
